Martin is now home to a new and different coffee shop. A ribbon cutting was held for Sly Coffee by The Weakley County Chamber of Commerce and Martin Business Association with numerous people in the community in attendance showing their support.
Business owners Sarah and Chad Yates started the business process last summer and their first day open was February of this year.
“I have been in the restaurant world for many, many years and I’ve always wanted to open up a small mom and pop café shop,” Sarah stated.
The costs ended up just being too much at the moment to do that, so the Yates decided to start out smaller.
“This doesn’t happen without the backend of your family. We’ve been through a lot of things together and we’ve grown so much as individuals and now this is just another step in our book,” Sarah stated.
The ‘SLY’ name is actually Sarah’s full initials, Sarah Lane Yates. The logo, a fox, coincides with Yates’ initials, hence, their business name was founded.
“Sly like a fox. We love animals,” Sarah said.
Sly Coffee wanted to do something with their coffee that wasn’t the average, everyday recipe. Wanting to stand out and trying to do things that are fun, the coffee shop has ever-changing monthly lattes. Junes flavor is Cheesecake.
Sly Coffee wants to bring new and different tastes to the community and provide something different from the rest.
“A lot of times when you go to a coffee shop, coffees can be a little bitter so when we did our taste testing we decided t go a different way with a dual blend coffee—a dark and light blend espresso and it’s super smooth where you get that coffee taste with no bitterness,” Sarah said.
The Yates said that they were thankful for all the support from the community, the Chamber of Commerce, Martin Business Association, friends, and family.
“Thank you all for opening your business here in Martin. We appreciate you, we’re thankful for you all and wish you the best of luck and much success,” Martin Mayor Randy Brundige stated.
