Chargers surge to 8-0 after bashing Bolivar

Martin-Westview racked up 425 total yards as the Chargers defeated host Bolivar 48-6 in Region 7-3A football action Friday night.

The Chargers, now 8-0, 5-0 in regional play, limited the Tigers to 100 total yards, 74 of those on the ground.

Westview freshman quarterback Graham Simpson had another good night, going 12-18 for 190 yards and three touchdowns. He’s 43 yards shy of 2,000 yards and thus far, has not been intercepted.

The Chargers got the job done on the ground and in the air.

On the ground, Cayden Davis led the Chargers 90 yards on 12 carries and a TD. Asa Barnes had five totes for 61 yards and a score. Cody Meeks carried seven times for 51 yards and a touchdown.

C.D. Damron led Westview’s receivers with three catches for 42 yards and two touchdowns. Damron also picked off a pass and returned it 13 yards. Miles Brown had two catches for 42 yards and a score. Donteze Joy got into the act, working out of the wildcat. He had to chase down a bad snap and heaved the ball in the air and into the waiting arms of Cooper Spaulding for a 2-yard TD reception.

The Chargers took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring with 9:59 to play after Damron reeled in a 7-yard pass from Simpson. Meeks tacked on the deuce and the Chargers led 8-0. Simpson struck again at the 4:59 mark, locating Brown for a 40-yard hookup. The PAT failed. With 1:58 to play, Simpson and Damron again connected for a 28-yard score. Jayce Cook’s kick lifted the Chargers to a 21-0 lead. Cook added five PATs.

In the second frame, Barnes raced 34 yards at the 7:46 mark and the Chargers surged ahead 28-0. With 2:18 remaining, Meeks galloped 16 yards for the score for a 35-0 Westview lead. Joy’s circus pass to Spaulding with no time remaining in the half lifted the Chargers to a 41-0 lead.

Bolivar disrupted the Chargers’ spree when it posted a touchdown with 11:14 to play in the third. The Chargers eventually answered when Cayden Davis scored from the 1 with 8:58 to play.

Nolan Pritchett forced and recovered a fumble for Westview and had 12 total tackles, including two for loss and three unassisted.

The Chargers will be idle this week but will return to action Oct. 25 when it hosts McNairy Central, 1-6, 0-4 in Region 7-3A. McNairy played Liberty Monday night.
