Commissioner Brian Donavant will step down from his seat on the Weakley County Commission on August 31, after serving two years on the commission.
Donavant, who currently represents District Six, announced his resignation at the County Commission meeting on Tuesday, May 28 after serving two years on the commission.
“It has been my distinct privilege to work alongside commissioners, elected and appointed officials, staff, and volunteers committed to the success of Weakley County,” Donavant stated.
Donavant was a vocal member of the commission, always asking questions and starting discussions on issues-even if they were difficult conversations.
“I have a much a deeper appreciation for the work they do and for the passion and dedication with which they do it. Thank you to all who have indulged me during some direct, intense, and sometimes challenging conversations. Your efforts and commitment inspire me, and I greatly appreciate the work each of you do every day. I especially want to thank the citizens of District 6 who have placed their trust in me to represent them,” Donavant stated.
Donavant said that he is not only humbled, but grateful for the time he served on the commission.
“Most importantly for me personally, I have made several new friends, and I consider that to be the real treasure and benefit for my tenure with the commission. I wish only the best for each of you going forward. Thank you,” Donavant said.
Donavant did not give a reason for his resignation.
“Vacancies in county offices are filled by the county legislative body, and the person appointed serves until a successor is elected at the next general election. Vacancies in county offices do not require special elections,” according to Weakley County Administrator of Elections, Alex Britt.
