Weakley County FCE Holds Meeting at Farm Bureau

The Weakley County Family and Community Education Club recently met in the Farm Bureau Building in Dresden for their August meeting with 6 members present. 

Mary Elizabeth Bell, president, welcomed Sue Stewart, Jerry Seamans, JoAnne Gill, Betty Bequette, Pat Potter, Marti Herndon and McKenzie Hurst, County Agent, by reading the Thought for the Day, “If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way.”-Napoleon Hill. 

Marti Herndon gave the devotional and led the group in prayer. The group recited the “Pledge to the Flag”, read the “Club Collect” and sung the song “Beautiful Garden of Prayer” in unison.

The roll was called by Secretary JoAnne Gill with each member telling the number of canned beans for donation to We Care Minintries, the was a total of 17. They also told what language they would like to magically be fluent in, most said Spanish.

Gill read the minutes of the last meeting with no corrections needed.

Treasurer, Betty Bequette, gave the Treasurer’s Report with no corrections needed.

President Bell told that August is National Peach and Kiwi Month. The Western Region FCE Mini Conference will be held in Montgomery County Extention Office in Clarksville, TN. on August 6.  JoAnne Gill, Mary Elizabeth Bell and Betty Bequette will attend.  Bequette is in charge of the Cultural Arts for the district.

Bell also told that all Council, Region and TAFCE/NAFCE due are due October 1.  The September MyPlate/YourPlate donation for September will be canned chicken. Also, the Roll Call response for September will be to tell one thing you do for self care.

Since September is the month for the annual Club Outing, Bell asked for suggestions. After discussion, it was decided to have a luncheon at Simply Southern Restaurant in Gleason on September 6. The group will meet at the EW James parking lot in Dresden at 10:30 AM to car pool.

For the Agent’s Program, McKenzie Hurst, County Agent gave a handout of exercises to increase strength and coordination with safety tips such as; (1) Breathe in and out regularly during strength exercises. (2) Use smooth, steady movements when lifting weights to prevent injury.  (3) Keep arm and legs slightly bent without locking joints. (4) Choose a study chair with arms to support when seated. (5) Make slow and steady movements. Never bounce! (6) Always bend forward from the hips, not the waist. (7) Stop if you feel pain. There might be soreness, but should not hurt.

The meeting was adjourned by Bell reading the closing thought, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”-Nelson Mandela.

The group enjoyed the game of Bingo with Marti Herndon winning the Cover Card prize.

Hostess, Pat Potter served delicious Orange Poke Cape with various condiments and drink of choice.  She gave each member a box of delicious peanut butter fudge to carry home.
