Westview Roasts Visiting Trojans in Region Tilt

Westview freshman quarterback Graham Simpson lit up the Trojans with 23-27 passing for 488 yards and six touchdowns as Martin-Westview rolled to a 7-0 mark, drubbing visiting Dyersburg 58-22 Friday night at H.K. Grantham Field.

Simpson’s 64-yard pass on the first Charger offensive play to Cooper Spaulding gave the Chargers a quick 8-0 lead. Cody Meeks ran in the two-point conversion. Westview finished the game with 611 total yards. Miles Brown was the Charger’s leading receiver with five catches for 149 yards and three TDs.

The victory catapults the Chargers to a 4-0 mark in Region 7-3A.

The Trojans responded quickly when Peyton Hill scored after a 16-yard burst moments later. Dyersburg trailed 8-7.

After a series of stalemates, Simpson located Donteze Joy for a 26-yard scoring connection with :46 to play in the first. Joy added the deuce and the Chargers were on their way, leading 16-7. On the next possession, Simpson hooked up with Brown for a 71-yard TD pass. The Chargers led 23-7 with half of the second quarter to play.

Dyersburg cut into Westview’s lead when Logston Morgan scampered 7 yards for a touchdown. The Chargers led 23-15 late in the half. The Chargers returned to their scoring ways moments later. Spaulding scored from the 7 for a 30-15 advantage. Westview didn’t need long to score again.

The Trojans coughed up the football on their own side of the 50 and Westview pounced on the loose ball. Simpson connected with Joy again and the Chargers led 37-15 at the break.

In the middle of the third, Simpson connected with Brown for a 3-yard TD. The Chargers increased their

advantage to 44-15.

Hall tacked on another TD for the Trojans with his 1-yard plunge late in the third. Westview maintained a

a 44-22 lead mid-way in the third quarter.

Westview added a cosmetic touchdown when Simpson found Brown for 46 yards. Asa Barnes also scored

a 13-yard TD run.

Joy had six catches for 97 yards; Cooper Spaulding had two grabs for 95 yards. Meeks was Westview’s leading rusher with five carries for 36 yards. Asa Barnes had five totes for 26. All told, Westview had 488 yards passing, 123 yards rushing for 611 total yards and 23 first downs.

Defensively, Nolan Pritchett was Westview’s vacuum cleaner with 12 total tackles, five solo and two for loss. Damron had 11 total tackles, five solo and broke up a pass. Malik Smith had two tackles for loss.

The Trojans, 4-3, 2-2 in Region 7-3A, will be idle this week, but will return to action Oct. 18 when they host Scotts Hill. The Lions 1-6, 1-3 in region play, suffered a 38-8 loss to Ripley last Friday.

Meanwhile, Westview will visit Bolivar Central, 3-3, 2-2 in Region 7-3A action. The Tigers suffered a 54-6 rout against Jackson-South Side last Friday night. The Chargers have three games left, Bolivar, McNairy and Covington. Should the Chargers run the table until Week 11 of the season, they will play Covington for the 7-4A title and homefield advantage for the first two rounds of the state playoffs.
